Madam,
My kind friends Mr. & Mrs. [Balmanno?],
of New York, have informed me of your
obliging intention of placing my name
in your "Record". "It is an honor that
I dreamed not of". But allow me
to offer you my best thanks. They
also mention your desire that [Isa?]?
furnish you with some of my biographical
particulars. It is an awkward matter
to state these of living authors, as one
knows not the chief point of interest
& importance - namely, whether or no
their works have lived, as well as
themselves.
And as to personal incidents; most
writers' biographies, I believe, may
be summed in these few words - "They
were born _ they wrote _ they died,"
I trust it may be a very very
long time ere you have to add the
last particular to your account of
Madam,
Your obliged & obdt. Servt.
