Washington
Dec 18th 1862
Mrs S.J. Hale
I have just read
yours of the 16th and the memorial
it enclosed.
While I would gladly aid in
endowing Normal Schools for
girls in every state, & would
confidently anticipate the most
beneficent and far reaching
results from their establishment
I fear that nothing can be done
to that end by the present Congress.
This is the short session. It expires
on the 4th of March by limitation
and it has before an amount
of business that few can conceive.
If however, I can do anything
to promote so excellent an object
I will not willingly permit
the opportunity to escape. You
cannot well imagine the weight
and quick succession with which
duties press upon us in this season
of trial and sorrow.
Yours Very Truly
