Text

Fort Moultrie Charleston Aug 17th

My dear Mother -

Here I am safe & sound in
spite of Bilous fever Yellow fever - every thing
else. I went through Georgetown S.C. and the
most sickly places in the South but thank
heaven I have got at last to the most healthy
the most delightful place in the U.S. which
Sullivan's Island certainly is. I have no money
and my books which were sent from Beafort [Beaufort]
on a steamboat after I left that plase [place] were
all burnt, yet I bear my misfortunes
with a good grace.
There are two things which I wish
you would do. If you have bought a watch
I wish you would send as it is indispensable
to a military man. 2nd if you have made any
shirts [etc.] send them also, but if you have not
I prefer buying them myself as I can get
them here & do not wish to trouble you
There is most delightful society here &
I only wish that you & Mrs. Dupre & family
were here to enjoy yourselves.

I have not received a letter from you for a
long time. I wish you to write to me & tell
me every thing.
If you wish to know what I
have been doing in Beaufort you must tell
me what you are occupied with in Boston
I shall see you at the end of two years when
I shall resign from the Army no matter what
becomes of me. I was a great fool to
enter the Army though I have learned more of
the world - seen more than I otherwise should
have done.
I send Horatio $20 not
knowing whether he [DE: ?] received the
$50 which I sen [sent] before I left Beaufort
Your Son
