Text
Beaufort August 1st
My dear Mother
The day after I received
Horatio's letter & sent him $50 in return
I received orders to proceed immediately to
Charlestown S.C. I have made my arrangements
to start to-morrow. I am now in
want of money and have been obliged to
borrow from Lt. [Gowin?] so that I cannot
send $50 to Horatio as I promised.
I understand also that Charleston is
a very expensive place & I shall only
receive there my base pay = $64 per
month. [DE: ?] I cannot express to you how
sorry I feel for this contre-temps, for
I might in this cheap place have saved
$.50 in two months, which I cannot do in
Charleston. Give my love to Horatio -
tell him this which cannot be a greater
disappointment to him than it is to me.
Your affectionate Son
D.E Hale
I am in a very great hurry now - packing
up [etc.] - but I will write a long letter when
I get to Charleston
