Sir,
It becomes my melancholy duty, to report
to you the death of 1st Lt D E Hale
of the 1st Regt of Arty. He died at Plattsburg
about 11 o'clock last evening after a short
illness; an unexpected & sudden effusion of the
lungs was the immediate cause of his death.
He received every attention, that could
be bestowed upon him by Doctor's [Doctors] Satterle
& Hitchcock & by the other officers present.
He was amiable, brave & talented.
His loss will be deeply lamented
