Beaufort N.C. July 2[?]th

My dear Brother

You cannot conceive what pain
your letter gave me. Why did you not write
before if you needed the money? Why
did not you tell me that you needed
it so much? If I had known it; depend
upon it, I would have saved every cent of
my pay to send to you. As it is - I shall
pursue a strict course of economy for the
future & send all I can spare.
I send you fifty dollars - which is all
I have with me except about $[3?]. I have a
monthly pay due & I [DE: shall] will write to the pay
-master in Norfolk for it so that I can

send you fifty more in about eight
days.

Your affectionate Brother
D.E. Hale

P.S. I have thought best to send $20
in this letter & $30 in a letter to
my mother for you - Excuse [haste?]
DEH
