A library is not a modern invention. They have existed for thousands of years as hubs of knowledge and learning. These libraries that existed some thousands of years ago were very much private collections, privy only to kings and their consorts. Today in America, people have grown accustomed to information being of easy access. When they unlock their cell phones, they are opening up a whole world. Technology is not only changing the way we work but also the way we think: the way we behave.
The Athenaeum must become a place where the member can find rest from the hectic, fast-paced world. It must be a testament to the old with the new. In the year, 2050 we must use the status that the Athenaeum has as a private library to create a space for conversation, a place where people can share ideas and discuss instead of being spoon-fed information. The concept of the Athenaeum of 2050 is to submerge the building creating a more private atmosphere that feels removed.
