Project Assumption
Building technology is rapidly incorporating open concept in multiple spaces to provide people with an immediate appreciation for an entire space upon entry to a building. Simultaneously, libraries are continuing to make publications digitally accessible, allowing space to create a more engaging visitor experience. The Athenaeum of 2050 will need to feature an open museum that displays historic pieces while providing digital access for users who want more information. The Athenaeum will provide an exalted study space for private members, but will also adapt to be an interactive gallery for new users who want to embrace its history.
Project Statement
The concept for the Athenaeum of 2050 boasts a glass, steel, and stone façade that highlights an interactive gallery to draw in the public into the architecture collections. Inspired by Foster’s, The Athenaeum: The Ultimate Library, the redesign incorporates an expansive hall that spans floor to ceiling, displaying a rare collection of books. The open gallery integrates the inside and outside, so that visitors easily connect with the function of the Athenaeum. The design makes the Athenaeum a cornerstone of the historic district, where the open face gives the public a glimpse into its vast collections and history.
