Project Assumption
Multipurpose space is becoming more desirable in libraries today. Books are being replaced by technology, requiring less space for shelving and more open area for innovative learning. Whether on a personal computer, kindle, or other piece of technology, the comfort of the space is key to users' success. This proposal includes dedicated space for books, with additional storage below ground; however they are pushed behind the scenes. The overall openness of the plan allows the user to create their space, a direction in which education seems to be heading.
Project Statement
The Philadelphia Athenaeum can be compared to a Geode: An everyday brownstone Philadelphia building, with a hidden, exciting wealth of knowledge within. This proposal aims to remove the physical barrier, replacing it with a translucent facade which allows for visual connections between the public and the knowledge within. The presence of the building will remain the same, while the materiality and space will change. History is forever present within the building, with an interior to exterior reflecting pool, on the same axis as the flame of the unknown soldier.
