Project Assumption
In “thinking back | looking forward: the Athenaeum of Philadelphia”, the following is to be assumed: In 2050, new technologies and emphasis on social collaboration have advanced information gathering and exchange methods. Valuing the foundation set forth by previous eras and the evolution of the new generation, interactive and visual elements juxtaposed with physical representation and creations of the past create a holistic experience within the Athenaeum. Interactive visual walls, new forms of object and drawing recreation, and socially engaging spaces intertwined with foundational elements of the Athenaeum foster an innovative hub for the researchers and creators within the community.
Project Statement
Currently, the fortified-like structure exudes a presence but doesn’t connect strongly to the park. Its lantern and plaque are always lite, though its soul is mysterious to passerby. Meanwhile, its online presence is booming. This duality became the concept of our design. The spaces are divided into public and private zones. As the floors ascend, the information gathering methods and level of vocal exchange becomes simpler and quieter. Glimpses through tectonics heighten the mysteriousness of the spaces beyond, while circulating light and ventilation. Nature intertwines with research and creative exchange. A lantern at the entry signifies its ever going presence.
