Lady Anna, the lead character, is of noble birth but falls in love with a lowly but good tailor who supports her and her mother when her father, the evil Earl Lovel, denies her legitimacy. When it appears that part of the deceased Earl’s fortune will come to Lady Anna, she balks due to her love for the tailor. In desperation, her mother finds a pistol and tries unsuccessfully to murder Anna’s lover. She wounds but does not kill him; and the young man will not name her to the police. Lady Anna finds a solution which allows her to keep part of the old Earl’s fortune; she marries her tailor; and they emigrate to Australia, away from English society’s expectations.]]></dcterms:description>
