My heart was with you,\r\npicturing your joy, now that\r\nthe agony was over and you\r\nhad convinced not only others, but\r\nyourself, that success was in your\r\npower. I knew this, I knew you\r\ncould conquer - but I have deeply\r\nfeared that sense would prevail over\r\nreason, and that you would not\r\n\r\nmake the trial [DE: ?] necessary to success\r\nwith the enthusiasm which only can\r\ngive the heart its full enjoyment in \r\nmental pursuits. I am now happy to\r\nsay these fears are in a great measure\r\nremoved. Blessed is the [?] won by\r\nhonorable exertion - by our own self-\r\ndevoted exertion. You have done more\r\nThen obtain the approbation of others -\r\nyou feel satisfied with yourself.\r\nBut you must know permit your efforts\r\nto be suspended or slackened. The studies\r\non which you are about to enter, you\r\nsay are \"beautiful.\" Rely not on the\r\npleasantness of the path. [De: You may lose] Time may be lost\r\n[DE: as much time] by lingering among flowers\r\nas well as brambles. Resolve to leave\r\nnothing which you can do to ensure success\r\nneglected, and you will succeed. God will\r\nprosper you! I feel assured of it, if you\r\nonly \"act well your part.\" The fatherless\r\nhave more to encourage them to rely on\r\na blessing from heaven than those\r\nwho are rich in worldly friends. But\r\nthose who do have to go forth into the arena\r\nof this selfish world relying on the blessing\r\n\r\nof heaven and their own efforts, should be very\r\ncareful that their motives are pure. In this respect\r\nthe poor have the advantage of the rich,\r\nbecause the former may put forth all their\r\nStrength from motives founded on the noble\r\nand praise-worthy wish to rise, that they may be more useful to their\r\nfriends and to the world. And the poor are\r\nnot necessarily exposed to the temptations of flatterers\r\nand the allurements of luxury. The prudence\r\nthat their circumstances demands, instead\r\nof making them seem mean, will have the\r\neffect to give a manly & decided cast to the\r\ncharacter. This may be accomplished, if the\r\npoor man is consistent, is true to himself. If\r\nhe show the ability to rise, and the self-control\r\nwhich insures that he will rise. But\r\nnothing is more ridiculous than to see a youth\r\n[whose?] means of support must be of his own earning,\r\ndevoting his thoughts to the pleasures which\r\nrich men enjoy. It entirely destroys his dignity\r\nof character, because he assumes what he cannot\r\nsupport. Go on, my Son, in the path you\r\nhave entered, and which you can pursue\r\nwith honor & advantage. Endeavor to excel\r\nand if you not gain all at which you aim\r\nthe effect on your character will be most\r\nsalutary.\r\nI will, the first opportunity, send you\r\na [seal?] & [Willis' Poems?] which I have.\r\n\r\nWe are very well - and Willey is studying\r\nbravely. You need not be troubled that\r\nyou cannot obtain money for me - I hope\r\nto go on this year - and I must trust that\r\nProvidence which has never forsaken me,\r\nfor the future. Yours most affectionately.\r\nH. & W. send love\r\n\r\nCadet David E. Hale\r\nWest-Point\r\nN. York.\r\n"}],"sequences":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/sequence/normal","@type":"sc:Sequence","label":"Current Page Order","viewingDirection":"left-to-right","viewingHint":"non-paged","canvases":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[1]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2344/full/319%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2344","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2418,"height":3029,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/annotation/p0001-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/c6e1da0ce1a59875030d92ae136062bf.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2418,"height":3029,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2344","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p1"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[2]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2345/full/319%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2345","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2386,"height":2990,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/annotation/p0002-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/f8469779bda7227eef90a35e38c197a1.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2386,"height":2990,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2345","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p2"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[3]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2346/full/317%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2346","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2378,"height":3001,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/annotation/p0003-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/ddca585e9918e6f5499404eb87e51274.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2378,"height":3001,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2346","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p3"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p4","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[4]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2347/full/321%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2347","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2420,"height":3020,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/annotation/p0004-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/765c25c04a9d4cc45175e09f799aefc7.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2420,"height":3020,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/2347","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3424/canvas/p4"}]}]}]}
