That it\r\nis partly owing to the multiplicity of my occupations\r\nbut chiefly to my averseness to writing.\r\nI have every thing now to occupy myself with Drills,\r\ntwo or three different ones daily besides parades.\r\nThe [DE: M] Artillery drills are very fine - we have a \r\nlarge battery and we keep up a continued roar\r\nof cannon at drill-time. I received your present\r\nwith great pleasure as books are so scarce here; but\r\nI have read your letter with much more. Your\r\nremarks I have treasured them [up?] and in these long \r\nsolitary nights when I am walking my part as\r\nsentinel I continually think of them. I am sorry\r\nto find that you are in such low health and spirits\r\nI think a journey to the Springs would do you good.\r\nYou must remember that your health and comfort is \r\nmuch dearer to them than the greatest luxuries you\r\ncould offer them even that of a good education\r\n\r\nperhaps I may be selfish and presuming in offering\r\nthese remarks but I have been reading \"Elizabeth\r\nLatimer\" and you must forgive me if the thoughts which\r\nher fate give rise to have [DE: hurried] hurried me into my\r\nremarks unbefitting me I have heard what good your\r\njourney to Newburyport did you and this through the\r\nfine scenery of N. York ought certainly to relax your\r\nmind and restore its [tone?].\r\nI study all the spare time I have and recite\r\nwith a small section (all of whom have had letters\r\nto Superintendant [Superintendent] from their parents who are acquainted with\r\nhim, to Swift a cadet who stands first in his\r\nclass. I am indebted wholly to your name for the\r\nchance I have of reciting. I am in the first section\r\nabout the middle of it - I shall study hard and get\r\nto the head if I can. In answer to your former\r\nletter concerning our board whether I eat much\r\nmeat I can say our chief food is wheat, rice [etc.]\r\nand I do not eat so much meat as I did while\r\nin Boston. - I have not been inoculated nor\r\ncan I be till I get in barracks (when we shall be\r\nreleased from almost all duty except study) as [DE: I] it\r\nwill unfit me for duty for some days.\r\n\r\nI hope you will excuse my bad writing as I write this\r\nletter in the night.
