I am happy to find that I have been\r\nof some assistance to you & Horatio and believe\r\nme when I say that I do not wish my repayment\r\nfor what I have sent or shall continue to send.\r\nI expect to receive $200 clear of all\r\nexpenses at the end of December, if I should not\r\nget so much still, however I will send you $100\r\n- 1st of January. I did not know the true value\r\nof money till I saw by your arrangement how much\r\n$30 or $40 would assist in maintaining my sister[s?].\r\nIn this expensive country at the cheapest boarding\r\nhouse I have to pay $30 a month which is less\r\nthan the citizens pay as I have a room in the [Fort?].\r\nBesides this, I do not receive so much as I did\r\nat Beaufort by $12 as I have no allowance in money for quarters\r\nhere. I have only my base pay $64 pr month\r\n& $2 or $3 for fuel. But enough of this, it makes\r\none sick to look at, or talk of, money now, when I\r\nthink how thoughtlessly I spent it in Beaufort\r\nwhere I might have lived so cheaply.\r\n\r\nI wrote to you before I left Beaufort\r\nand again when I arrived at Ft Moultrie, remitting $20\r\nby my last letter. Have you received my letter?\r\nI requested you to send my watch & four shirts\r\nif you could without inconvenience. However, on second\r\nthought, I will get my linen made here but I\r\nwish you would send the watch if you have an\r\nopportunity by one of the packets which run from Boston\r\nto Charleston.\r\nI believe I told you that I lost\r\nmy books. I do not intend to purchase any more -\r\nthey are so troublesome to carry about with me.\r\nI find Charleston very much like other\r\ncities, some of the streets remind me of Boston, but\r\nthe appearance of the people, their manners & mode of\r\nliving are very different from that of the good citizens\r\nof B. I have become acquainted with a few of\r\nthe first families here, but the rancorous feeling of\r\nthe majority towards the officers has not entirely subsided.\r\nBefore the Nullification War when a large\r\nnumber of Officer & Troops were sent here to [overcome?]\r\n& subdue them if necessary. they were exceedingly polite\r\n& hospitable to all officers of the Army: used to send\r\ntheir carriages for them & almost compel the Officers\r\nto accept their invitations. But all this kind feeling\r\nvanished when they discovered that the Officers of the\r\nU.S. Army might be called to fight not for but\r\nagainst them.\r\nThey are now polite but cold except\r\na few who belong to the Union party or those whose\r\nfeelings are superior to [DE: ?] [resentment] towards an \r\n\r\nofficer who only performs his duty in obeying his\r\nsuperior by taking up arms either to quell a rebellion\r\nor to resist those whose madness would dissolve the Union.\r\nNow, vanity aside, I will tell you something about\r\nmyself which may gratify you. A young married lady\r\nof my acquaintance told a brother officer that she thought\r\nI had one of the sweetest dispositions in the world.\r\nEither my temper must have changed very much\r\nor I must have obtained more command over it in\r\nappearance at least. I trust it is so, and I know\r\nthat I have improved in knowledge of the world, the\r\n'savoir faire' which is indespensable [indispensable] to a gentleman.\r\nMany of the customs of the South which at first\r\nappear singular to a New Englander after he becomes\r\nhabituated to them, tend to improve him in manner and\r\nmode of thinking. His mind becomes more enlarged [ED: page torn]\r\nI shall not regret having been stationed [ED: page torn]\r\nshort time at the South although it has proved more\r\nexpensive than living at the North. I expect shortly\r\nto be transferred to the North for one Company of\r\nour Regiment has been already sent there and the whole\r\nwill I hope go there in the course of a year -\r\nI have written you quite a long letter for me\r\nand I expect a long one from you in return.\r\nGive my respects to my friends in Boston\r\n& my love to my brothers & sisters.\r\n\r\nYour affectionate Son\r\nDavid E. Hale\r\n\r\nP.S. I would send something for Horatio, but I have been obliged to\r\nbuy some furniture & have barely enough to pay my board.\r\n"}],"sequences":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/sequence/normal","@type":"sc:Sequence","label":"Current Page Order","viewingDirection":"left-to-right","viewingHint":"non-paged","canvases":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[1]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1805/full/330%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1805","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2516,"height":3052,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/annotation/p0001-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/0affb2402bffb90c5ca60e21b4c20576.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2516,"height":3052,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1805","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p1"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[2]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1806/full/325%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1806","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2433,"height":2999,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/annotation/p0002-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/18250918bb3125ab60ae0849f5e6cca8.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2433,"height":2999,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1806","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p2"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[3]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1807/full/323%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1807","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2416,"height":2991,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/annotation/p0003-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/4eb4662aebf325f31697f38f449d919a.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2416,"height":2991,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1807","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p3"}]},{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p4","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"[4]","thumbnail":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1808/full/324%2C400/0/default.jpg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1808","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"width":2429,"height":3001,"images":[{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/annotation/p0004-image","@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/files/original/c4cb54e2ae5b0803fa61b04433724920.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","width":2429,"height":3001,"service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/image/1808","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"}},"on":"http://omeka.philaathenaeum.org/collections/items/presentation/3298/canvas/p4"}]}]}]}
