He was Vice President of Philadelphia School of Design for Women (later Moore College of Art), Freemason; Artists Fund Society; Society of St. George; Director of P.A.F.A.; and a Freeman of London.  During the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia he was chief of the Bureau of Art."," Russell Smith (1812-1896)  was born in Glasgow, Scotland and came to the U.S. in 1819 and later studied art with James R. Lambdin.  His diversified career included work as a scene painter, landscape painter and scientific draughtsman.
