Project Assumption
With much of the Athenaeum’s collection available and accessed online, the content of this information loses a place of origin, especially with the removal of the historic building. The Athenaeum’s collection, rooted in Philadelphia, defines its identity and becomes the new pride and ornament of Philadelphia.
Project Statement
The concept of the Philadelphia Athenaeum of 2050 examines the library as a sacred space. As “the architectural library of Philadelphia,” the new building’s reflective exterior mirrors and pays homage to the rich architecture of the historic neighborhood, while its central courtyard becomes a place of self-reflection. By incorporating interactive public spaces and exhibitions with quiet, contemplative spaces, the future Athenaeum will work to provide a place of origin for the collection in a progressive manner, while preserving the Athenaeum’s traditions.
