Project Assumption
In 2050, technology will be in every aspect of life. Not only will it be incorporated even more than it is now, it will be stronger than ever before. All types of information will be stored through technology. Libraries, specifically the Athenaeum, will act as places of gathering to discuss new ideas. The Philadelphia community will still be preserved in the way that it is now, but the Athenaeum will bring a different sense of community to the famous historic district yet still remain a private library.
Project Statement
The Athenaeum is not only going to incorporate the future of technology but the importance of the history as well. These two different spaces are going to be represented as private/present and public/past. While the courtyard is only accessible to its members, it engages the Philadelphia community since the inside atrium is viewable to all. The topography varies greatly throughout the site allowing the boxes to be exposed at different heights. Choosing not to rebuild on this historic site shows the importance in preserving the area around the Athenaeum and allowing the glass boxes to represent movement through time.
