Project Assumption
Recent decades have witnessed a shift from paper-based design to digital design in the field of immaterial production and in particular in the architectural profession. Thus the project envisions a library in a time that most of its collection will be born-digital and the future Athenæum will be an infrastructure of data where its knowledge will be stored in rows of servers. With its Cloud service for its users (mainly architects, scholars, designers in related fields and interested general public), the production of knowledge will be a simultaneous process of creation and storage and potentially sharing based on users’ choices.
Project Statement
The project proposes two interdependent components for the future Athenæum: the Wall - a highly efficient and controlled space for the production, exchange and storage of digital data - and an open space covered by tree Canopy - a productive landscape where the publicness of a library is celebrated as it is a space dedicated to the coming together of individuals to the production and dissemination of knowledge. Together, the Wall and Canopy make the future Athenæum again the pride of Philadelphia for its collections and services, and more importantly, for its celebration of collectivity both online and on-site.
