Project Assumption
The 40,000 SF New Athenaeum occupies the old footprint. The articulated building exterior of concrete panel and glass reflects new technology. At the south façade, above the adjacent landmark Dilworth House, are solar membranes. Keeping with an ecological theme, additional solar devices, a green wall and grey water collection are incorporated.
The interior features stacks and storage for the existing collections, community spaces and classrooms for book-binding, robotics and cooking. Unique spaces including immersion pods, a hologram room and 3-D printing facilities offer new library features.
Gallery and artist-in-residence spaces offer possibilities to introduce new material into the library program.

Project Statement
The thrust of this design for the New Athenaeum is multi-faceted:
• To provide a home for the abundance of materials now housed in the current building.
• To provide greater dissemination of and access to the materials through physical and digital means.
• To create new spaces for learning through hands-on experiences and total multi-media immersion.
• To provide spaces for learning for people of all ages and backgrounds.
The design strategy includes the retention of the Dilworth Building and the creation of a six-level new Athenaeum that will be contemporary in nature while still harmonious with its surroundings.
