With the mission to preserve Philadelphia’s heritage still paramount, the archives were moved into a jewel box-like underground vault, equipped with rigorous environmental controls and robotic, searchable filing systems. A public garden extends Washington Square. Above, one tower holds Athenaeum functions and another rentable studio spaces. Project Statement In looking forward to the Athenaeum remaining Philadelphia’s premier Architectural Library, we present a greatly expanded and visible building, which will support the organization’s mission to disseminate useful knowledge by encouraging access by a great range of Philadelphians. If by 2050 drawings have been reduced to bits of information at the scale of the pixel, then the most common measure of the archive would be the megabyte. The virtual space of the hard drive would replace our experience of the library. This is symptomatic of the digital era, where the real thing is often substituted by its duplicate. We believe that the digitally immersed future will require a sanctuary for human intuition rooted in tactile processes. Project Statement Our proposal for a new Athenaeum is dedicated to the exploration of design practices guided by the human hand. It is organized around the idea that we can gain access to the past through what we make in the present, while what is made today can be archived for future generations to access. This cyclical process resonates with the structure of memory and forms the foundation of our programmatic strategy. We have strived to create a building out of touch: highly textured, rooted in craft and contoured to evoke abstractions of the human body. By rotating a volume of the original building multiple times we start to give shape to the Athenaeum-2050. In some years even computers will be obsolete, replaced by smaller digital devices with higher information storage capacity, creating an interaction atmosphere between the user and the information more dynamic than the books could ever get to be. Project Statement Following the idea of the Project Assumption, my proposal seeks to anticipate this change of interaction with information, by adapting it to architecture. As a way to approach the Athenaeum to the city and the user the library rises above the existing buildings, presenting the city to the person, and the building being an object of cultural presence in Philadelphia because it can be seen from every part of the city. The Athenaeum visitors will have the possibility to obtain information with the building’s façade that will be composed by an interactive touch screen, to consult information of what the user sees over the city buildings. The library will not only be just a library, it will also a great interactive education center, becoming a landmark in the way it achieves to connect knowledge with people. With the disappearance of books, and access to digital information unlinked from any specific location in the world, it has been widely assumed that we would no longer need libraries. We believe the opposite is true. More than ever, the library of the future should exist as a place of knowledge and information exchange, by attracting and bringing people together, as well as celebrating the book. Contemporary libraries should be more then just an archive of texts, neaty ordered and stacked together. We looked back to Etienne Louis Boulee’s 'Grand Library of France,' where we found our starting point. Here, information is collected around a central open space, programmed for visitor congregation and discussion. Project Statement We started to design a flexible bookshelf that could contain the whole collection of the Athenaeum (books, manuscripts, magazines, architectural drawings, archives, even the small and large display items). The shelf can be expanded in the future by placing an extra row of shelves on the inner corridor and providing the Athenaeum to grow. This 'supershelf' functions simultaneously as the facade and structure of the library. In this way we created a central space, an enclosed courtyard surrounded by the storage of knowledge. Special volumes were carefully placed in this central space - designed in such a way to accomodate all the necessary functions including administration spaces, reading rooms, and study areas. On top, these volumes physically form the stage for public events including exhibitions and lectures. Translucent milky glass forms the facade of the library; during the day the building blends into its surrounding environment and the milky glass protects the collection from direct sunlight, but come nightfall the library will glow and become the pride of Philadelphia. The spaces are divided into public and private zones. As the floors ascend, the information gathering methods and level of vocal exchange becomes simpler and quieter. Glimpses through tectonics heighten the mysteriousness of the spaces beyond, while circulating light and ventilation. Nature intertwines with research and creative exchange. We think that written book can be moved on a digital support with no loss of meanings only if its value is just in the words that it contains. When instead a book's message is also paraverbal (either it is worth for layout or handwritten) the technology cannot replace the physical book. So we invented PYR, a smart device that brings a new way of searching and reading books, and even give access to physical books on caveau. Project Statement In order to bring monumentality we worked on timeless archetypes, and classical use of space and voids. Starting from studying the space of Athens Parthenon we designed an environment where the user non just see, but actually feels to be in a sacred space. As for naòs in Parthenon there is Athena’s statue, in the heart of the building there is a pure clean volume, the caveau, where the physical books are available. A monumental facade with slightly overhanging arches enclose these spaces and makes the whole library a landmark, instantly recognizable even from the satellite top view. We developed a number of programs to achieve this “hub-of-culture” status. Assuming volumes housing these programs were not going to change, we decided to make void spaces/hallways places for technological innovation, housing interactive walls/new technologies. Architectural record display/storage would go in the core, forcing users to connect with the past, while on their way to the latest tech. Project Statement The “New Athenaeum” transforms into a fluid landscape. The old surface rises and folds into space, creating the essential binding catalyst between combination and division of the analog present and the digital future. The new surface undertakes the role of an park-islet in the city while the invert underground surface forms the new entrance from the city reinforcing the foundation process while the tower emerges as a welcoming beacon of the digital era. On its own accord the underground space is shaped in an open manner into two different levels and is accessible from the three different points (city, tower, park). New technologies will play an important role in this transition. Similarly libraries and other cultural institutions as we know them today would become prominent hubs mediating this transition between technology and society in terms of how information is being processed, stored, searched and presented to the individuals and society. Current text searching technology will be replaced by more advanced search browsers. These would allow us to access diverse information data with attributes such as texture, smell, tone, reflectivity etc. Exhibits presented by these institutions will display digitally processed and enhanced objects, 3d environments and projections in their full spectrum, including tones, smells, atmospheres, able to fully interact with the visitor and thus creating a unique experience. Project Statement The project is conceived as an interpretation of the existing Athenaeum brownstone building from 19th century during the shift of the cultural paradigm. What would the institution’s on-site and on-line presence look like in the period of time when written text is being slowly replaced by verbal information and images and video by digital objects, interactive models and simulations? In the time when the digital copy of an object is more real and vivid as the original. The project focuses on the internal organization of spaces within a generic volume and its relation to the digital content presented by the institution. One of the two main spaces is the basement. It serves as a main area for producing the digital content for the institution and contains facilities such as text-to-speech studio, digital lab for 3d scanning, printing and creating interactive digital projections of architectural exhibits, along with archive and server room. The other main space is the computer study room on the top floor which would allow the visitors access the digital content via voice-in/voice-out computers. Volume compressed by these two floors is conceived as a sequence of rather acoustic-like spaces for exhibiting the digital content such as interactive installations, digital 3d objects and environments. Ground floor is defined as variable space for temporary exhibitions, technology workshops, lectures and digital broadcasting.
