At the entrance pavilion, one encounters a diagonal elevator traversing the different volumes and programmatic zones buried below grade. Half the space is devoted to public exhibits, study rooms and a multi-media auditorium and the other half is dedicated to private areas for extensive archives, conservation and administration. Project Statement My concept for the Athenaeum in 2050, is a contemporary structure that doesn’t compromise its historic standing, and functions as a hub for easily accessed knowledge. I created slopes that emerge from the grade to form the massing. I decided to enlist a sense of uniform to design in the form of even heights and widths of the volumes, as to not overwhelm the neighborhood. The fluidity of the slopes and how they subtly mimic nature and organic formation address the historical aspect, while the order, sharp angles, grids, and geometry address the macro scale of Philadelphia as a city. That's the premise of this proposal, assuming that everything will be in digital format. A static building simply with a consulting function will be obsolete. In terms of building technology this proposal focus on the development of the transparent /translucent material. Not only has to be functional, climatic and in constructive terms, but also it must be allowed to project images there, for example architecture images. Project Statement Using the concept of a non existing building this proposal plays with the idea of “material” and “immaterial”. The “material” building, mainly underground, includes the selected functions; museum, storage and data control center (upper ground). The immaterial is constituted by a transparent structure that represented the library worldwide. It is upper ground and has the shape of the old building. The transparency allows that the surroundings get inside of the building, enhancing connections between the building and the city. It will work as a sculpture, with reminiscences of the past, creating a harmonious connection among the different formats. The interior shelters the memory of the institution’s past incarnation. Remnants of the façade are repurposed as both structure and reminder, maintaining an unbroken history. With the archive now hosted and retrieved off-site, the interior has been liberated for activities relating to the advancement of the Athenaeum’s mission. Spaces allow for the encouragement of discourse, and the hosting of events that celebrate and further two hundred plus years of the Athenaeum’s cultural and intellectual contributions that will serve as an identifying marker within Philadelphia. The past is the necessary foundation to create a future. Project Statement A shadow casts overhead. Stealing the sun. Where is the not immediately visible obstruction located? On the approach, the building is an arms length away, yet the looming shadow does not match the structure seen. The tangible building, and its non-matching counterpart are presently the only existing clues. Before entering, all that is known is there is a building, a shadow exists, and not knowing what lies behind the cause of the shadow until climbing the, at first, unseen tower. We know the present, and that the future exists, but not what it consists of until reaching the unseen future. Not only will it be incorporated even more than it is now, it will be stronger than ever before. All types of information will be stored through technology. Libraries, specifically the Athenaeum, will act as places of gathering to discuss new ideas. The Philadelphia community will still be preserved in the way that it is now, but the Athenaeum will bring a different sense of community to the famous historic district yet still remain a private library. Project Statement The Athenaeum is not only going to incorporate the future of technology but the importance of the history as well. These two different spaces are going to be represented as private/present and public/past. While the courtyard is only accessible to its members, it engages the Philadelphia community since the inside atrium is viewable to all. The topography varies greatly throughout the site allowing the boxes to be exposed at different heights. Choosing not to rebuild on this historic site shows the importance in preserving the area around the Athenaeum and allowing the glass boxes to represent movement through time. These systems can sustain a building’s aquatic needs while giving excess water back to Philadelphia. Project Statement Prolonged Circulation and the Progression of Knowledge. Circulation mimics the flow of filtration; conceptualizing the idea that one filters through art, artifacts and books to gain knowledge. Decelerating the path of travel exposes the user to different architectural elements and allow one to filter through information to gain knowledge. The faster one filters through knowledge, the less contaminates are detected. By slowing down circulation, it lets each visitor experience all futuristic resources the library has to offer. Finally, the top floors view the building below, so members look down and understand where all filtering knowledge originated. Due to this swift switch to the digital world and the scarcity of physical publications, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia will become a sacred shrine to cultivate ones knowledge through the practice of handling a tangible book in a creative and growing environment of proliferation. Project Statement Although the Athenaeum will be a place for an exclusive group of paying members, in order to be the pride and ornament of Philadelphia and achieve the goal of expanding knowledge, the space must be inviting towards both the members as well as the city’s inhabitants. The integrating concept behind the design for the 2050 Athenaeum of Philadelphia is formulated with the idea of growth in of both knowledge and nature, cultivation of both intellect and environment and sacredness of both physical books and open green space. From the entrance, one can see attendees on the top floor reading/exhibition space and vice versa. The reading and exhibition spaces are integrated on each floor to encourage inspiration and knowledge. The private glass reading bubbles with views to Washington Square park extruding from the green wall and the public spaces allow for semi-privacy in the building. The angled roof that corresponds to the 10 bays of 18’ feet structural system allows for sunlight to enter each floor as does the half glass wall on the south elevation. The Athenaeum of 2050 will be a facilitator for gathering information in an integrated space.
