Digital access will be the dominant way through which people pursuit education so the Athenaeum of 2050 should do it’s best to integrate both the historical aspect of the space with new advances in technology. Project Statement Although the Athenaeum will be a place for an exclusive group of paying members, in order to be the pride and ornament of Philadelphia and achieve the goal of expanding knowledge, the space must be inviting towards both the members as well as the city’s inhabitants. The integrating concept behind the design for the 2050 Athenaeum of Philadelphia is formulated with the idea of growth in of both knowledge and nature, cultivation of both intellect and environment and sacredness of both physical books and open green space. From the entrance, one can see attendees on the top floor reading/exhibition space and vice versa. The reading and exhibition spaces are integrated on each floor to encourage inspiration and knowledge. The private glass reading bubbles with views to Washington Square park extruding from the green wall and the public spaces allow for semi-privacy in the building. The angled roof that corresponds to the 10 bays of 18’ feet structural system allows for sunlight to enter each floor as does the half glass wall on the south elevation. The Athenaeum of 2050 will be a facilitator for gathering information in an integrated space. That's the premise of this proposal, assuming that everything will be in digital format. A static building simply with a consulting function will be obsolete. In terms of building technology this proposal focus on the development of the transparent /translucent material. Not only has to be functional, climatic and in constructive terms, but also it must be allowed to project images there, for example architecture images. Project Statement Using the concept of a non existing building this proposal plays with the idea of “material” and “immaterial”. The “material” building, mainly underground, includes the selected functions; museum, storage and data control center (upper ground). With the disappearance of books, and access to digital information unlinked from any specific location in the world, it has been widely assumed that we would no longer need libraries. We believe the opposite is true. More than ever, the library of the future should exist as a place of knowledge and information exchange, by attracting and bringing people together, as well as celebrating the book. Contemporary libraries should be more then just an archive of texts, neaty ordered and stacked together. We looked back to Etienne Louis Boulee’s 'Grand Library of France,' where we found our starting point. Here, information is collected around a central open space, programmed for visitor congregation and discussion. Project Statement We started to design a flexible bookshelf that could contain the whole collection of the Athenaeum (books, manuscripts, magazines, architectural drawings, archives, even the small and large display items). The shelf can be expanded in the future by placing an extra row of shelves on the inner corridor and providing the Athenaeum to grow. This 'supershelf' functions simultaneously as the facade and structure of the library. In this way we created a central space, an enclosed courtyard surrounded by the storage of knowledge. Special volumes were carefully placed in this central space - designed in such a way to accomodate all the necessary functions including administration spaces, reading rooms, and study areas. On top, these volumes physically form the stage for public events including exhibitions and lectures. Translucent milky glass forms the facade of the library; during the day the building blends into its surrounding environment and the milky glass protects the collection from direct sunlight, but come nightfall the library will glow and become the pride of Philadelphia. The virtual space of the hard drive would replace our experience of the library. This is symptomatic of the digital era, where the real thing is often substituted by its duplicate. We believe that the digitally immersed future will require a sanctuary for human intuition rooted in tactile processes. Project Statement Our proposal for a new Athenaeum is dedicated to the exploration of design practices guided by the human hand. It is organized around the idea that we can gain access to the past through what we make in the present, while what is made today can be archived for future generations to access. There is great opportunity, being in a high traffic area, to create a strong image within the community. By angling the façade towards the most prevalent pedestrian viewpoint, it creates an engaging and inviting feel towards the building. Assuming volumes housing these programs were not going to change, we decided to make void spaces/hallways places for technological innovation, housing interactive walls/new technologies. Architectural record display/storage would go in the core, forcing users to connect with the past, while on their way to the latest tech. Professionals, students and artists have made the Athenaeum reading rooms a home. Rather than restricting access, the Athenaeum adapted to accommodate additional uses. With the mission to preserve Philadelphia’s heritage still paramount, the archives were moved into a jewel box-like underground vault, equipped with rigorous environmental controls and robotic, searchable filing systems. A public garden extends Washington Square. Above, one tower holds Athenaeum functions and another rentable studio spaces. Project Statement In looking forward to the Athenaeum remaining Philadelphia’s premier Architectural Library, we present a greatly expanded and visible building, which will support the organization’s mission to disseminate useful knowledge by encouraging access by a great range of Philadelphians. A book is something special, special in the way it has been used throughout all of history, and to completely have them gone in the future seems really hard to imagine. If anything, technology can help a library with new digital centers. No one knows the future, but if books were to be gone, the Athenaeum would still stand tall and proud for the museum it is. Project Statement You go by the Athenaeum today and do not notice the library. The Majority of the locals across the street in Washington Square Park did not know what the Athenaeum was. In the future this building has to be more public. Engaging with the community will solve this problem. The community of Society Hill, love their beautiful historic landmark: Washington Square. What better way is there to engage with the public, as well as engaging with the landmark itself, than to connect with the park. Not only is this concept to be more public but it is also to create a connection with the park itself, by introducing a vertical garden wall, it will allow nature/public to gradually become part of the site: The Athenaeum. Special Collection Physical 3D models can be printed with extreme precision and economy. These models are equipped with electronic sensors that allow projected overlays of building systems. The Athenaeum has printed over 700 of these sophisticated models. Special Technology Tech companies have created virtual walkthroughs of all existing and historic buildings. The Athenaeum has acquired these walkthroughs, linked them to models, books, and drawings, and created 20 virtual theaters for their review. Project Statement Program Story Researchers move throughout the library retrieving books from the Monumental Book Wall, models from the exterior Model Skin, and drawings from the Analog Stacks. The items are then reviewed simultaneously in the virtual theaters of the Digital Hive, creating a unique and comprehensive study of architecture. Design Story The building is defined by a diagonal cut that separates the analog from the digital theater programs and provides a continuous cascading community reading room accessed through a compressed circulation/service zone. An exterior skin of circular niches wraps the building in a continuous display case for architectural models. Project Statement The concept of this design is to connect the experience of the Washington Square Park with the experience of the new and improved Athenaeum. Originally, the thought was to literally have a green bridge connect from the park to the building. However, as the design progressed so did the concept of the design. The axis from the center of the park created the circulation path of the Athenaeum, separating the public from the private making the library the sacred place that is a journey to get to. The concept has progressed to becoming the idea of experience based from the circulation the park provides. Inspired by Foster’s, The Athenaeum: The Ultimate Library, the redesign incorporates an expansive hall that spans floor to ceiling, displaying a rare collection of books. The open gallery integrates the inside and outside, so that visitors easily connect with the function of the Athenaeum. The design makes the Athenaeum a cornerstone of the historic district, where the open face gives the public a glimpse into its vast collections and history.
