If anything, technology can help a library with new digital centers. No one knows the future, but if books were to be gone, the Athenaeum would still stand tall and proud for the museum it is. Project Statement You go by the Athenaeum today and do not notice the library. The Majority of the locals across the street in Washington Square Park did not know what the Athenaeum was. In the future this building has to be more public. Engaging with the community will solve this problem. The community of Society Hill, love their beautiful historic landmark: Washington Square. What better way is there to engage with the public, as well as engaging with the landmark itself, than to connect with the park. Not only is this concept to be more public but it is also to create a connection with the park itself, by introducing a vertical garden wall, it will allow nature/public to gradually become part of the site: The Athenaeum. Project Statement The concept of this design is to connect the experience of the Washington Square Park with the experience of the new and improved Athenaeum. Originally, the thought was to literally have a green bridge connect from the park to the building. However, as the design progressed so did the concept of the design. The axis from the center of the park created the circulation path of the Athenaeum, separating the public from the private making the library the sacred place that is a journey to get to. Water pollution is becoming a common problem in Northeastern US cities; hence, water filtration systems are becoming our solution. These systems can sustain a building’s aquatic needs while giving excess water back to Philadelphia. Project Statement Prolonged Circulation and the Progression of Knowledge. Circulation mimics the flow of filtration; conceptualizing the idea that one filters through art, artifacts and books to gain knowledge. Decelerating the path of travel exposes the user to different architectural elements and allow one to filter through information to gain knowledge. The faster one filters through knowledge, the less contaminates are detected. By slowing down circulation, it lets each visitor experience all futuristic resources the library has to offer. Finally, the top floors view the building below, so members look down and understand where all filtering knowledge originated. Project Statement My concept for the Athenaeum in 2050, is a contemporary structure that doesn’t compromise its historic standing, and functions as a hub for easily accessed knowledge. I created slopes that emerge from the grade to form the massing. I decided to enlist a sense of uniform to design in the form of even heights and widths of the volumes, as to not overwhelm the neighborhood. The fluidity of the slopes and how they subtly mimic nature and organic formation address the historical aspect, while the order, sharp angles, grids, and geometry address the macro scale of Philadelphia as a city. While the courtyard is only accessible to its members, it engages the Philadelphia community since the inside atrium is viewable to all. The topography varies greatly throughout the site allowing the boxes to be exposed at different heights. Choosing not to rebuild on this historic site shows the importance in preserving the area around the Athenaeum and allowing the glass boxes to represent movement through time. An escape to the Athenaeum in the year 2015 will give visitors the chance to experience tangible books in it’s libraries, rather than their counterpart of electronic prints which continue to develop. The past is the necessary foundation to create a future. Project Statement A shadow casts overhead. Stealing the sun. Where is the not immediately visible obstruction located? On the approach, the building is an arms length away, yet the looming shadow does not match the structure seen. The tangible building, and its non-matching counterpart are presently the only existing clues. Before entering, all that is known is there is a building, a shadow exists, and not knowing what lies behind the cause of the shadow until climbing the, at first, unseen tower. We know the present, and that the future exists, but not what it consists of until reaching the unseen future. Like an oracle, members of the library will rise to the top of the building to consult the Librarian on topics related to their research. IT IS ALSO COMPARABLE TO OTHERS OF ITS SORT. FOR MY PROJECT I WANTED TO EXPLORE THE HIDDEN POSSIBILITIES AROUND THE SITE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE USE OF THE PARK IN THE AREA TO ATTRACT PEOPLE TO ENGAGE IN THE SPACE AND MAKE THE BUILDING DISTINGUISHABLE. THEREFORE, IN MY CONCEPT I STARTED BY CREATING A TALL SOLID RECTANGULAR VOLUME. THIS WOULD ACT AS THE MAIN WEIGHT OF THE BUILDING AND ALL OF THE OTHER ASPECTS WOULD HAVE TO BE ADDED IT. I ADDED BLOCKS TO THE MASS TO CREATE PROTRUDING ROOMS. THESE ROOMS CONNECTED THE PEOPLE TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD OUTSIDE. NEXT I CARVED OUT BLOCKS TO CREATE NEGATIVE SPACES. THESE NEGATIVE SPACES CONNECTED THE OUTTER WORLD TO THE ATHANAEUM BECAUSE THEY ACTED AS A VISUAL HOOK THAT DRAWS PEOPLE’S ATTENTION INTO THE BUIDLING. TO FURTHER ENGAGE THE STRUCTURE TO THE SURROUNDING, A LARGE PORTION OF THE SITE WAS KEPT UNBUILT ANDINSTEAD USED AS A AN OUTDOOR COURTYARD WITH SEATING AREAS. They have existed for thousands of years as hubs of knowledge and learning. These libraries that existed some thousands of years ago were very much private collections, privy only to kings and their consorts. Today in America, people have grown accustomed to information being of easy access. When they unlock their cell phones, they are opening up a whole world. Technology is not only changing the way we work but also the way we think: the way we behave. The Athenaeum must become a place where the member can find rest from the hectic, fast-paced world. It must be a testament to the old with the new. In the year, 2050 we must use the status that the Athenaeum has as a private library to create a space for conversation, a place where people can share ideas and discuss instead of being spoon-fed information. The concept of the Athenaeum of 2050 is to submerge the building creating a more private atmosphere that feels removed.
