Project Statement The trees from the park overpower the current Athenaeum, and the park is used more often as a public reading area that the Athenaeum itself. The new design will draw the attention it needs by mimicking the shape of the trees that lean over 6th Street lessening the relative grandness of the park. From the entrance, one can see attendees on the top floor reading/exhibition space and vice versa. The reading and exhibition spaces are integrated on each floor to encourage inspiration and knowledge. The private glass reading bubbles with views to Washington Square park extruding from the green wall and the public spaces allow for semi-privacy in the building. The angled roof that corresponds to the 10 bays of 18’ feet structural system allows for sunlight to enter each floor as does the half glass wall on the south elevation. Project Statement The Athenaeum of 2050 is a place where members can step back from all the blinding technology and enjoy the true way of studying and learning. In a high-tech growing future where technology’s rate of growth is exponential, we run the risk of having constant interaction with technology and not finding an escape from it. The Athenaeum, the heart of preservation, will be the place where we preserve documents and move back to the traditional “library”. With a Zen-like atmosphere, the proposed grand library space is where members will have an opportunity to retreat from the technological world. Thus, the future Athenaeum should firstly be a play on the sacred public contemplative space. Secondly, keep public space separate and unaffected by private members spaces. Thirdly, it should also serve its original purpose of preserving architectural artifacts. Project Statement The program for the Philadelphia Athenaeum of 2050 is a contemporary take on the temple of Athena. There is a circular procession around the Naos (public contemplative space) and the treasury (library and storage). However, instead of a horizontal organization of space, the procession is vertical. This allows one to experience the original climb to the temple of Athena internally (circulating upwards to the contemplative space). The new Athenaeum will offer a sublime journey to a future full of surprises. Digital technology has transformed our access to knowledge. Information is available anytime, anywhere, at our convenience. In contrast, the Athenaeum needs to be memorable. It needs to offer awe and mystery to entice people to visit and linger. It enables the nostalgic experience of tangible books, artwork, and encourages exploration of the unknown future. The design should enhance the connection to the city and Washington Park. Project Statement The concept is the winding journey to acquire knowledge. The main stairs wind through the columns; it is framed by exhibit of visible storage areas. From the entrance lobby, you can go to the main auditorium or the main public spaces. The second floor has additional exhibit and study spaces, the third contains the library and private chess room. Parallel to the stairs is a winding hallway – balcony overlooking the auditorium. The winding path extends through the park to connect the Athenaeum to the central Washington Monument beyond. If this building can be disposed of in the near future, what if all historic buildings in the site’s area disappeared as well? We are left with little to represent the character and history that is Philadelphia. Removing these historic places from the site shows how important the preservation of architectural documents is to the city. Project Statement The Athenaeum plays an essential role in Philadelphia since it holds the architectural documents of the city. Storage, preservation, and curatorial operations will be set at the heart of the program. This central, solid piece will hold up the rest of the building. The public will circulate around it, briefly pass through it, and ultimately preserve it. The physical architecture of Philadelphia is no longer regarded as the city’s pride and ornament. Instead it is the artifact, carefully preserved within a building whose new purpose is to disseminate this information and resource.
