The spaces are divided into public and private zones. As the floors ascend, the information gathering methods and level of vocal exchange becomes simpler and quieter. Glimpses through tectonics heighten the mysteriousness of the spaces beyond, while circulating light and ventilation. Nature intertwines with research and creative exchange. The progress of information technology has repositioned the library as a broad public institution, liberated from attending to the necessities of the object — allowing a slide toward pure space. Caught up in the confusion, the library houses only difficult objects, texts which reject the technological charge to become ethereal. The object slowly becomes an artifact to be enjoyed in a space tailored to its altered status. The library is, then, simultaneously monumental and intimate — presenting itself as public edifice and private retreat. Project Statement The library suggests public space as an intellectual refuge. A sunken plaza is obscured by a false façade on Sixth Street. In this retreat one may pass time observing activity in the reading room or on the ramp puncturing the building envelope. The entrance is along St. James — a vaulted passage that denies the exterior world. Upon entering the library, one is immediately found within the tracery of stacks. Three stories of steel frames filter light and support volumes of books. In the library, disparate forms are conjoined to create thoughtful spaces for the public to rest. Project Statement The design approaches traditional library functions from an industrial and e-commerce point of view where efficient storage and distribution of goods is essential. An automated storage and retrieval system allows for the maximum amount of materials to be held in the Athenæum’s collections and distributed throughout the building and to member organizations with the click of a button. The design features gallery space for the library’s museum items and visiting exhibitions, office areas for the Athenæum’s growing research staff, and visualization labs where members can work directly with digital files and records. The proposal also assumes that towards the year 2050 and beyond to 2150 Philadelphia will be growing exponentially with the Athenaeum of Philadelphia prospering and benefiting from endorsements, funding, archives, antiquities, and collections from newly constructed and historical buildings. Project Statement This proposal explores the Athenaeum as a vertical landscape of public and scholarly activities. The design aims to centralize and disseminate the Athenaeum’s expansive collection and public programs throughout the building -- a tall house that reinforces fluid scholarly activities and public functions as well as creating spaces of surprise, excitement, and energy. The exposed activity-filled interior rooms and follies perpetually transform the Athenaeum’s ornamental quality. The verticality allows the Athenaeum to concentrate its wealth of knowledge into a single tower. The Athenaeum will perform a double duty as both an architectural library and a lighthouse to observe the ever-changing architecture of Philadelphia. The importance of these roles has fluctuated over time, as has content. The destined mutability of our learning devices and artifacts brings us to question the true and lasting purpose of libraries and athenaeums in our society. Permanence, we ought to believe, lies in the shear significance of the “place” that the athenaeum creates in the city, with the memory it carries in its walls. Project Statement While most libraries today address both of these functions through a model of mass distribution and consumption, the athenaeum is curated and its content is highly significant, bordering the function that of a museum. It needs to display treasures as a museum does, protect them as an archive does, but have people interact with them in the intimate way that a library allows. In our proposal, content is form and content is structure. Like studiolos or cabinets de curiosités, we see the architecture as becoming one with the treasures it contains; the rooms are defined by the memory carried in the walls surrounding them, whether this memory be physical, experiential, digital or a yet to be -ial.
